Seoul.- This Sunday, North Korea fired at least two unidentified projectiles towards the Sea of Japan, which travelled approximately 900 kilometres without causing damage, according to reports from the authorities in Seoul and Tokyo. This event coincides with the state visit that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has scheduled to China. The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea reported observing the launch of multiple missiles near Pyongyang starting at 7:50 AM local time. According to the JCS, the unidentified projectiles travelled approximately 900 kilometres before impacting the Sea of Japan. The JCS also mentioned that it has been collaborating with the United States and Japan, increasing vigilance in light of the possibility of new launches. Japan’s Defence Minister, Shinjiro Koizumi, clarified at a press conference that the missiles fired into the Sea of Japan landed outside the country’s exclusive economic zone. «Both ballistic missiles took irregular routes, and we are still in the process of analysis,» Koizumi commented, adding that Japan has lodged a protest to Pyongyang through its embassy in Beijing. US forces in South Korea stated that they are aware of the launch. «We are in communication with our allies and partners. According to current assessments, this event does not pose a threat to US personnel or territory, nor to our allies,» said the USFK. This is the first launch of the year conducted by Pyongyang, and it occurred on the same day that the North Korean state agency reported that the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un, visited a munitions factory to learn about guided weapon production.
