Brussels calls for a transition in Venezuela that includes Corina Machado and Edmundo González.

Brussels (EFE).- This Monday, the European Commission called for a democratic transition in Venezuela that includes the participation of opposition figures María Corina Machado and Edmundo González, following the capture of Nicolás Maduro by the United States on Saturday. «The next steps focus on dialogue to achieve a democratic transition, which must include Edmundo González and María Corina Machado,» stated the spokesperson for the European Commission, Anitta Hipper, during the daily press briefing. Hipper commented that González and Machado «have worked in defence of democracy and human rights in Venezuela, and in 2024 they guided the Venezuelan population to exercise their right to vote.» «Millions of Venezuelans have expressed their desire for change and have backed Edmundo González.» The spokesperson for the community, Paula Pinho, emphasised that «it is important to remember that Nicolás Maduro did not have the legitimacy of a democratically elected leader, and therefore, current events open the door to a democratic transition driven by the people of Venezuela.» When questioned about the «possible signals» suggesting that the President of the United States, Donald Trump, is interested in a democratic transition in the country, the spokesperson indicated that this is a question that should be directed to Trump himself. In this same context, she highlighted «the importance of respecting international law and the UN Charter,» a message that the EU has been reiterating since Saturday.
