Ábalos finds himself without a lawyer once again on the brink of being tried and while being in prison.

Carlos Bautista, lawyer for José Luis Ábalos, has decided to cease representing him just as the former minister is preparing to stand trial in the Koldo case, which investigates the collection of commissions for the awarding of contracts for the purchase of face masks during the pandemic, after having been in pre-trial detention. In a document sent to the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court, Bautista informs that he resigns from representing Ábalos Meco and requests that the pending procedural deadlines be halted to avoid any prejudice. The lawyer states that the resignation has been communicated to the client through a visit to the centre and attaches the document in which he notifies the former minister.
