Sánchez expresses to Delcy Rodríguez and Edmundo González his support for a peaceful transition.

Madrid. This Friday, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has communicated with the interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, and with the opposition leader, Edmundo González Urrutia, to express Spain’s support for a transition in Venezuela. This has been confirmed on his X account, where he indicated that he has assured both that Spain wishes to support Venezuela and help find common ground. Sánchez has informed both that Latin America is aware of Spain’s support and reminded them that he reiterated this week to the Presidents of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, and Uruguay. The President of the Government expressed his desire to engage in dialogue with both Rodríguez and González to assist in the transition and emphasised that Spain can play a mediating role. Spain supports a change in Venezuela, led by the Venezuelans. This is what I have communicated to @delcyrodriguezv and @EdmundoGU. On his X profile, González stated that he had a conversation with Sánchez, during which he communicated that the release of political prisoners in Venezuela must be verified and must be a total freedom. The Venezuelan opposition figure has asserted that the international community, especially Spain, is aware of the distinction between symbolic actions and commitments to democracy and the rule of law. González has stressed that Venezuela requires a transition, which implies the release of all political prisoners, the cessation of persecution, the disarmament of paramilitary groups, and respect for the will of the people, expressed in the elections of 28 July.
