The number of deaths in the protests in Iran has risen to 538, according to an NGO based in the USA.

According to the NGO Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 538 people have lost their lives in the protests that began in Iran on 28 December due to the economic crisis, which have spread to over a hundred cities across the country. This group reported that, of that figure, 48 are members of the Iranian security forces and 490 are protesters, including eight who are minors. According to data provided to EFE by Skylar Thompson, deputy director of HRA, the death toll during the 15 days of protests could reach 579, although it is currently under verification. Two weeks of protests have passed, spurred on by Reza Pahvalí, who has urged Iranians to continue the demonstrations and to begin a general strike to pressure the Islamic Republic of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. According to this organisation, since 28 December, the total number of arrests in Iran has reached 10,675, of which 160 are minors and 52 are students. Across hundreds of cities in Iran, numerous demonstrations are taking place, despite the lack of internet access and coverage for more than 72 hours. These protests, which began due to the country’s economic situation, have evolved into criticisms of the Islamic Republic and its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
