Sánchez defends pro-Atlanticism in an equal partnership between the EU and the USA.

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has reiterated his support for Spain’s pro-Atlanticism, interpreting it as a relationship between the European Union and the United States, rather than as a «vassalage» of Europeans to the administration of Donald Trump. Sánchez expressed his belief in the benefits of this pro-Atlanticism during the press conference he held alongside his Greek counterpart, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, after their meeting at the Palace of Moncloa, where one of the topics was the analysis of the current geopolitical situation. The two leaders discussed Trump’s ambitions regarding Greenland, following the statements from the President of the United States about his intention to control this territory. The head of the Spanish Government recalled that a declaration was signed last week alongside other European countries on this issue and expressed his confidence that security in the Arctic can be ensured. It is crucial to understand that collective security does not conflict with the security of a country like the United States. For this reason, he emphasised that everyone must contribute to that collective security, highlighting that Spain demonstrates this by citing the deployment of more than 2,000 military personnel in Eastern Europe in response to the threat from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
