Copenhagen (EFE) – On Monday, the Government of Greenland expressed its support for NATO to assume responsibility for the defence of this Danish territory, in relation to the interest of US President Donald Trump for national security reasons. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and is a member of NATO. Therefore, the defence of Greenland should be carried out through the Alliance, stated the Naalakkersuisut in a communiqué. The Greenlandic government mentioned the support that six European NATO countries (Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Poland) provided to this region, considering it an incentive to strengthen the defence of this Arctic island through the Atlantic Alliance. All NATO countries, including the United States, share an interest in the protection of Greenland, and the Government of Greenland wishes, alongside Denmark, for discussions on defence to take place through cooperation within the Alliance. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenlandic Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt are expected to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this week. According to Danish channel TV2, the meeting will take place this Wednesday in Washington.
The Greenland government wants NATO to take charge of the island’s defence.
