The European Union affirmed that Greenland is included in the mutual defence clause of Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty, although this issue is not currently under discussion. Anitta Hipper, spokesperson for Kaja Kallas, indicated that Greenland is part of the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark and, therefore, is subject to the clause of mutual solidarity. Article 42.7 states that, in the event of armed aggression against a country of the Union, the other Member States must offer support and assistance. Ursula von der Leyen, speaking from Limassol, Cyprus, stated that Greenland can count on the support of the EU in the face of threats from the President of the United States.
The EU says that Greenland is «in principle» covered by the European mutual defence clause.
