Copenhagen.- This Thursday, the governments of Denmark and Greenland emphasised the importance of beginning direct dialogue with the United States regarding the interest in that Danish autonomous territory, while several European countries joined the initiative to strengthen the island’s defence. The meeting that took place in Washington among the three parties concluded with a pact to establish a high-level group tasked with «addressing the security concerns of the United States, while respecting Denmark’s red lines,» according to Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Dialogue has commenced, and it has been agreed to form a working group to address the existing disagreements among the parties. The President of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, advocated for cooperation with the United States, which involves «respect for our constitutional framework, international law, and our sovereignty as a nation.» The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, also supported the proposal, although she reminded that «there remains a disagreement, as the United States’ intention to acquire Greenland remains strong.» «It is serious and, therefore, we continue to work to prevent that situation from occurring,» Frederiksen stated in a communiqué.
