Spain advocates for a «European army» to safeguard the territorial integrity of the EU.

This Wednesday, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, defended that the European Union must move towards greater integration in defence matters. He proposed establishing a «European army» and suggested the formation of a «coalition of volunteers» to ensure security on the continent. In a press conference, Albares related this capacity for deterrence to the protection of the sovereignty of member countries, expressing Spain’s support for Denmark in the debate regarding the status of Greenland. The minister stated that Greenlanders have expressed their desire to continue being part of Denmark and a member state of the EU. In this context, the minister emphasised that this is the position that Spain supports, reminding that the sovereignty of countries and respect for their territorial integrity are principles in international relations and in the United Nations Charter.
