The Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility has suggested improving the competencies of the National Institute of Social Security to achieve better control over sick leave, due to the increase in incidence in recent years. According to the report on temporary incapacity released this Wednesday, the rate of work absence has risen by 60% between 2017 and 2024, with a 15% increase in the average duration of sick leave. Additionally, spending has exceeded €16.5 billion, tripling since 2014 and becoming the second largest item in Social Security, only behind pensions. The president of the AIReF, Cristina Herrero, emphasised the importance of strengthening primary care.
The AIReF requests the Social Security for earlier monitoring of sick leave.
