Sánchez announces a campaign against social media «stronger than their wallets»

Madrid. The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Friday the launch of a campaign with five actions aimed at social networks, in which he predicted that their owners could face «criminal liabilities»: «Our determination is greater than their economic interest,» he stated. In a video shared on his account on the platform X, Sánchez claimed that «social networks have transformed into a kind of Wild West.» He mentioned that there are applications that «harbour criminal activities, pornography, and violence.» During his speech, a banner appeared that read: «In a period of 11 days, Grok users produced three million sexualised images on X, of which more than 23,000 involved minors.» «This week something has happened in our democracies, as a tech oligarch has infiltrated the phones of millions of Spanish citizens to dictate what they should think,» Sánchez commented, referring to a message shared by Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, in which he criticised the Spanish Government. Social media platforms have transformed into a chaotic environment, and when democracies try to establish control, their owners become uneasy. We will continue to move forward despite their threats. Furthermore, it was stated that social networks «spy on us,» «take our information,» and propagate «hatred and disinformation.»
