Beijing.- This Monday, the Ministry of Commerce of China stated that it is analysing the content and repercussions of the decision made by the Supreme Court of the United States regarding the tariffs imposed by the administration of Donald Trump. Furthermore, it reaffirmed its disagreement with unilateral actions and criticised protectionism. In a statement, the ministry indicated that it has taken into account the court’s ruling in the dispute concerning the tariffs and is conducting an assessment of its consequences. China opposes unilateral tariff measures and emphasises that there are no winners in a trade war and that protectionism does not provide solutions, the ministry stated, following the decision of the US Supreme Court, as it could be argued that the Trump administration overstepped its bounds by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act as the legal basis to impose those taxes. The ministry noted that the so-called reciprocal tariffs and the taxes related to fentanyl are unilateral actions that, according to Beijing, violate international economic and trade norms and contravene US domestic law, and do not benefit either party. The statement emphasised that relations between the two powers should be managed through cooperation: facts have shown that both China and the United States benefit from collaboration and incur losses when confronting each other, asserted the ministry, which called on Washington to eliminate the unilateral tariffs imposed on its trading partners.
China says it is «evaluating» the Supreme Court ruling on US tariffs and criticises «protectionism».
