Guterres: AI is being used to suppress rights worldwide.

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warned in Geneva that technology and artificial intelligence are being employed in ways that undermine rights and exacerbate inequality. He emphasised at the opening of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council that certain technological advancements subject marginalized individuals to new forms of discrimination, both online and offline. Guterres also mentioned that online environments are being polluted by misinformation and hate, resulting in real-world harm. In his address to high-level delegations from UN member countries, Guterres criticised an offensive against human rights, noting that civic space is being curtailed, while journalists and activists are being imprisoned, NGOs are being shut down, and women’s rights are being restricted.
