Kallas does not expect progress on further sanctions against Russia on the fourth anniversary of the war.

Brussels.- This Monday, Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, moderated expectations regarding the possibility of the EU reaching an agreement on the twentieth package of sanctions against Russia, just one day before the fourth anniversary of its invasion of Ukraine. «A debate will take place on the twentieth package of sanctions. However, I believe that no progress will be made on this topic today, although we will continue to apply pressure,» Kallas stated to the media upon arriving at a meeting of the Council of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the community. On 6 February, the European Commission proposed banning maritime services for Russian oil tankers, imposing sanctions on a greater number of companies in the energy sector and more Russian banks, in addition to establishing measures to prevent sensitive products from entering Russia. The EU’s goal is to complete this twentieth round of sanctions in commemoration of the fourth anniversary of the war that Russia began on 24 February 2022. Following Brussels’ proposal, the ambassadors of the member states have been discussing the set of restrictive measures, which require unanimous approval.
