Tehran.- On Tuesday, the Iranian government alerted university students about the consequences of burning flags of the Islamic Republic during the protests that have occurred at universities across the country. “The student is an individual who has the right to express themselves,” stated government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani during a press conference. “However, it is essential that we all respect the established limits: the sacred and the flag are two aspects that should not be crossed,” she warned. Mohajerani was referring to the burning of Islamic Republic flags that took place at various universities in Tehran, during the third day of protests at educational institutions in three cities across the country. The burning of flags of the United States and Israel is a common practice in protests organised by the Iranian state, and now university students are adopting this form of protest by setting fire to symbols of the Islamic Republic.
