Lombok (Indonesia) – On Wednesday, a court in Indonesia sentenced two individuals to 18 years in prison for the murder of Matilde Muñoz in her hotel room in Lombok last July. The hearing took place at the Mataram court, where the trial began on December 17. The sentence coincides with the penalty request made by the prosecutor, Made Saptini. The defendants are a current and a former Indonesian worker from the hotel where Muñoz was staying. During the trial, they admitted to entering Muñoz’s room to steal in the early hours of July 2 and killing her after she woke up. The prosecution charged them with homicide, intentional murder, and aggravated robbery, crimes that could carry sentences ranging from 15 years in prison to the death penalty, although in Indonesia the latter is rarely carried out.
