Irene Montero, the second-in-command of Podemos, has asserted that, following Gabriel Rufián’s action, there are millions of left-wing people who yearn for «left-wing», «banners», and «social justice», and she has urged to accept that «challenge». Montero made these statements during an interview on Canal Red when she was asked whether the decision of the leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz, not to run in the upcoming elections would bring about any changes in the left-wing parties. By reducing Díaz’s resignation to an «internal problem of Sumar», she highlighted that the central themes of left-wing debates «are found in another realm» and expressed her intention to accept Rufián’s «challenge» and begin to «work» to «confront fascism», while also suggesting reforms and changes that society requires. Montero has stated that she understands Díaz’s choice and has acknowledged that she has «numerous political disagreements» with her, emphasising that it is now the parties that make up Sumar that must seek another candidate.
Podemos states that its aim is to take up the challenge of millions of left-wing individuals.
