China assures Iran of its support in defending its sovereignty.

Bangkok (EFE) This Monday, China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart, Abas Araqchí, during which he reaffirmed China’s support for the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of Iran. This is the first indication of Beijing’s backing for Tehran since the attacks carried out by the United States and Israel. According to an announcement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the conversation took place at Araqchí’s request, in which Wang stated that the aggression from the United States and Israel «violates international law and crosses Iran’s red lines.» The Chinese Foreign Minister declared that Iran has no alternative but to defend itself after the attack and urged the United States and Israel to stop military actions, avoid escalation, and prevent the entire Middle East region from becoming embroiled in conflict. According to Wang, in a statement from the Foreign Ministry, China supports Iran in defending its rights and interests. The country, which is an ally of Iran, has expressed its position of fairness and justice and hopes to continue contributing to the prevention of increased tensions in the region, amid the crisis in the Middle East and after having reached Cyprus. While expressing support for Iran’s right to self-defence, Wang expressed confidence that the country, «considering the situation, will maintain national and social stability and address the concerns of its neighbours,» in a context where several Gulf countries have been targeted by Iranian missile attacks and the conflict between the Lebanese Shia group Hizbollah and Israel has intensified. China has called for «military actions to be halted» in light of the rising tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran, expressed its «concern» about the danger of the conflict widening, and advocated for the security of the Strait of Hormuz, considering it «an international common interest.»
