The Government does not expect «any consequence» from the fact that the U.S. cannot use the bases.

Madrid. The Foreign Affairs Minister, José Manuel Albares, has stated that he has not received any request from the United States to use the bases in Rota and Morón for attacks against Iran and that he does not anticipate any repercussions from the Government’s stance, which opposes their use in an operation that is not aligned with the bilateral treaty or the UN Charter. During the press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting, Albares stressed that these are matters of Spanish sovereignty that may be employed in the context of the agreement with the United States, so there is nothing in the Government’s position. Furthermore, he mentioned that he has not had discussions with any representatives of the US administration and that he has not received any complaints in this regard. Spain’s commitment to Euro-Atlantic security cannot be questioned, he emphasised, before mentioning the participation of Spanish troops in the Baltic, Lebanon, and Iraq.
