France has permitted United States military aircraft to operate from one of its air bases on French soil, excluding other facilities in the Middle East. Sources from the French Army General Staff highlighted that permission has been granted for American aircraft supporting operations, without specifying the type of aircraft, although combat planes are excluded. The sources clarified that previous information regarding the authorisation for US aircraft to use French bases in the Middle East was incorrect. However, they explained that US aircraft transiting through their base in France will not partake in attacks against Iran, but will be present to provide protection to their allies in the area. Earlier this week, two French bases in the United Arab Emirates were attacked by Iran. The French Defence Minister, Catherine Vautrin, stated that there is no certainty that her country was the target, as those facilities are also used by the UAE. There were no casualties or injuries reported during Iran’s offensives, and the bases have continued to operate normally. France has reproached the United States and Israel for initiating attacks against Iran without the backing of international legality, but has emphasised that the primary responsibility for the situation lies with Iran, due to its failure to abide by international norms with its nuclear and ballistic weapon programmes, as well as its support for terrorist groups in the region. Among its objectives in the midst of the current conflict, in addition to safeguarding French citizens in the Middle East, are supporting its allies who have been attacked by the Iranian regime and restoring navigation in the affected maritime routes, for which it has suggested forming a coalition.
France allows support aircraft from the USA, not fighters, to use a base in its territory.
