Marlaska appoints the senior chief of the Balearic Islands as the new number two of the National Police.

The Ministry of the Interior has appointed Chief Commissioner José Santafé Arnedo as the new Deputy Operational Director of the National Police. This is the highest position an officer can hold in the institution, following the resignation of José Ángel González, who was accused of a sexual assault offence. He is one of the 89 chief commissioners, in contrast to the 22 women who could apply for the position. Since 18th February, the head of the Human Resources Sub-Directorate, Gema Barroso, has temporarily assumed the role, as stipulated by the regulations.
