The EU is betting on diplomacy in the Middle East and rejects involvement in Hormuz.

Brussels (EFE).- This Thursday, the leaders of the European Union (EU) issued a joint statement opposing the increase in violence in the Middle East, advocating for a diplomatic solution to the conflict and ruling out sending military assistance to the United States in the Strait of Hormuz. The leaders of the Twenty-Seven expressed a unified position regarding the escalation of the conflict in the Persian Gulf, the economic repercussions of which are causing concern in European capitals, as well as impacting the security of EU member states and their NATO allies. At a summit that took place today in Brussels, the leaders adopted a «crisis mode» approach to address the joint response to the events in the Middle East and deliberate on whether to respond to requests for military support from the U.S. President, Donald Trump, to protect ships in the Strait of Hormuz. After several weeks that highlighted divisions within the EU regarding the conflict triggered by the United States and Israel, the messages issued today aligned more with the «no to war» stance of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, than with the positions expressed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, or the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz.
