Madrid.- This Thursday, the law on repeat offenders will return to the plenary session of Congress for its final approval. The Government rejected two amendments from the PP during its discussion in the Senate, which proposed stricter controls for the regularisation of migrants and an increase in the budget. The initiative by Junts was approved on 12 February by Congress, with the support of PSOE, PP, Vox, PNV, and the group that proposed it. It was sent to the Senate, where the PP presented several amendments, including one that alters the immigration law to increase controls over migrants. The PP also proposed an amendment that would require, within a maximum period of two years, the increase of area, provincial, and autonomous public prosecutors with at least one prosecutor for every one hundred thousand inhabitants. The Government blocked these amendments in the Congress Table, arguing that their approval would entail an increase in the budget. This would mean the creation of 400 jobs for officials in the provincial immigration brigades, resulting in an additional cost of 17 million euros. The second amendment would entail the creation of 491 new positions for prosecutors, leading to an increase of approximately 54 million euros in public accounts. The PP will challenge this veto from the Government, which it describes as serious and that implies the stripping of powers from the Cortes Generales.
