According to an article published by The Wall Street Journal, the Pentagon is considering deploying an additional 10,000 soldiers to the Middle East amid the conflict with Iran, which would include ground forces. The newspaper, which relies on information from the Department of Defence, states that this move would involve infantry troops and armoured vehicles to provide more military options to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who appears to be focused on negotiating with Iran, although so far these talks have not yielded results. Both Trump and the Pentagon have not ruled out the possibility of conducting a ground operation in the Islamic Republic. This has caused Tehran to issue threats of escalating attacks against Israel and U.S. targets in Gulf nations, as well as increasing its control over the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, which are crucial for global trade. There has been discussion about the possibility of Washington sending troops to the island of Jarg, which houses Iran’s oil centre. This decision could lead to public opposition, according to some polls. A recent survey by Reuters and Ipsos reveals that 55% of Americans oppose sending troops to Iran, while 34% would support deploying only a small group, and only 7% favour sending a large number of soldiers. Today, Trump extended his suspension of attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure until 6 April, «at the request of the Government» of Tehran, as he communicated on his Truth Social platform.
