Beirut. This Thursday, the Syrian president, Ahmed al Sharaa, celebrates a year in office, a period he has used to rebuild relations with the international community and to distance himself from his history as an Islamist leader. Yesterday, he was received in Moscow by Russian president, Vladimir Putin, an ally of his adversary Bashar al Assad. A day earlier, he received a call from Donald Trump, who expressed praise for a man for whom he had previously offered a reward. Al Sharaa established himself as the leader of Syria just after opposition groups deposed al Assad at the end of 2024. However, he was not officially designated as the supreme leader until 29 January 2025.
Al Sharaa has been in charge of Syria for a year, a country back on the global stage.
