Begoña Gómez opposes being judged by a jury and denounces the judge’s conjectures.

Begoña Gómez, wife of the Prime Minister, has appealed the ruling of Judge Juan Carlos Peinado which determines that her case should be assessed by a jury. In her appeal, she argues that the judge’s decision includes misleading reasoning, «assumptions» without evidence, and «numerous oversights.» Lawyer Antonio Camacho has submitted a reform resource, to which EFE has gained access, in which he argues that the only thing demonstrated in this process is «the firm determination of the Instructor to pursue a criminal case, despite not having any foundation to support it,» and that Begoña Gómez is being investigated «for being the wife of the Prime Minister.» The text refutes the existence of evidence against Gómez regarding the five crimes attributed to her by the judge: influence peddling, business corruption, intrusiveness, embezzlement, and misappropriation of trademarks. Additionally, it points out that bringing this case before a jury could result in a «parallel trial» and affect the right to a fair trial with an impartial judge. The request made by Begoña Gómez’s lawyer seeks to annul the order in which the judge of Instruction Court number 41 in Madrid consolidated the entire process into one case, decided to assign the procedure to a court with a jury, and summoned the three investigated, Begoña Gómez, her advisor Cristina Álvarez, and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, for the upcoming 1st of April.
