The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, expressed his administration’s concern over the explosions in Caracas and other areas of Venezuela, which the Venezuelan leader, Nicolás Maduro, described as a military aggression by the United States. Petro stated in a communication on his X account that the Government of Colombia is worried about reports of explosions and unusual aerial activity in Venezuela, as well as the increased tension in the region. Previously, the Colombian leader claimed that Caracas was being attacked and emphasised that the OAS and the UN must be urgently convened to address the situation. Petro reaffirmed Colombia’s commitment to the principles of the UN, particularly regarding respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of countries, and the peaceful resolution of international disputes, condemning any unilateral military action that could exacerbate the situation or endanger civilian populations. The country is positioned in favour of maintaining peace in the region and calls for a reduction in tensions, urging all parties to avoid actions that escalate the conflict and to prioritise dialogue. The president also indicated that his administration has implemented actions to safeguard the civilian population and maintain stability along the Colombia-Venezuela border. The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to maintain lines of diplomatic communication with the involved governments and will promote initiatives aimed at verifying the facts, as well as preserving peace and security in the region.
