Costa will convene the EU countries next week to coordinate the response to Trump.

Brussels. The President of the European Council, António Costa, announced that he will call on member states for an extraordinary meeting «in the coming days» to coordinate the response to the tariffs proposed by United States President Donald Trump. According to European sources, Costa could hold the meeting in person on Thursday, 22 January. Costa mentioned that in his discussions with member states regarding the tensions related to Greenland, he reiterated his commitment to Europe’s support and solidarity towards Denmark and Greenland, as well as in relation to the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty. He highlighted that member countries acknowledge the common interest in peace and security in the Arctic, especially through collaboration within NATO, and agree that the tariffs would harm transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the trade treaty between the EU and the US. He also emphasised that EU nations are ready to protect themselves from any kind of pressure but are also willing to continue constructive dialogue with the United States on all issues of mutual interest. The ambassadors of the EU member states held an emergency meeting, convened following Trump’s announcement of the tariffs, during which they discussed possible responses.
