Denmark anticipates a «calm» process with the United States regarding Greenland.

Copenhagen.- This Friday, Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, reported that Denmark and the United States have begun discussions to address security in Greenland and the Arctic, expressing his hope that the process will be «smooth». «Without going into details, I can confirm that a meeting took place yesterday in Washington where it was reaffirmed that this is our intention, and a plan has been outlined on how to carry it out,» Rasmussen commented at the conclusion of a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Danish Parliament. Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, plans to visit Greenland to meet with the autonomous region’s president, Jens-Frederik Nielsen. Following the meeting of the Danish Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, the Danish Foreign Minister expressed optimism about the progress of the high-level joint working group’s meetings agreed upon last week in Washington. «We will not announce the dates of these meetings, as it is important to avoid drama surrounding this issue. We must prevent last-minute news and maintain a calm process.» «It has already begun, although I cannot specify how long it will last,» stated the leader of Danish diplomacy. Frederiksen: «We agree that NATO must intensify its commitment in the Arctic. Defence and security in this region are the responsibility of the entire alliance.»
