Experts warn of a potential large-scale migration crisis due to the crisis in the Middle East.

The situation of the conflict in the Middle East has brought the migration issue onto the agenda of the European Union. Experts indicate that a worsening of conditions in Iran could result in movements of people amid a humanitarian crisis. Iran has around 92 million people, which is approximately four times the population of Syria at the beginning of its civil war in 2011. EFE Warner ten Kate, a migration specialist at the Clingendael Institute in the Netherlands, warns that if the conflict «gets out of control» and the region «loses stability», the migratory effect in the EU could be more significant than that experienced ten years ago during the Syrian refugee crisis. However, he clarifies that, in an initial stage, it is likely that displacements will be primarily internal. As he explains, as long as attacks remain at a controlled level, it is probable that people will move within the country, to other provinces or stay with relatives, rather than leaving Iran.
