Madrid (EFE).- This Sunday, five communities in the north and west of the peninsula – Cantabria, Galicia, Basque Country, Castilla y León and Extremadura – have been put on yellow alert due to weather conditions that may pose a risk for certain activities, due to rain, thawing and coastal phenomena. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has reported that the provinces of Ávila, León, Salamanca, Segovia and Zamora, located in Castilla y León, will have a yellow warning in effect throughout the day due to the risk of rain in the Central system of Ávila, where accumulations of between 30 and 40 litres are anticipated over a 24-hour period. Thawing is likely to occur in different areas of the central system of Ávila, where the snow level will be above 2,000 metres. That warning will also remain in effect during the early hours of Monday. Rain in the south of that province is expected to generate accumulations of approximately 60 litres per square metre. Other areas of the Central system of Salamanca, such as Ciudad Rodrigo, La Alberca and Béjar, will be impacted by thawing and a series of rains that could accumulate up to 40 litres per square metre. In the northern part of the peninsula, the alert will remain in place until midday in the Basque Country due to the danger of maritime phenomena along the coasts of Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, where waves of between 4 and 5 metres in height are forecasted. The yellow alert has been in effect temporarily on the Cantabrian coast during the morning due to a combined sea from the west or northwest, with waves reaching between 4 and 5 metres. In the Galician community, the alert will not be activated until 18:00 hours, affecting areas of the provinces of Ourense, Pontevedra and A Coruña, with the latter being the most affected by the weather conditions. Rain is anticipated in that area, with the possibility of accumulating up to 50 litres per square metre and winds that could reach 80 kilometres per hour. Regarding Extremadura, rain is expected in certain localities of the province of Cáceres starting at 18:00 hours.
