Gender-based violence: two children and 10 women killed so far this year

Madrid. The homicides of Ana María, María José, and Petronila in one week related to gender violence raise the total number of gender crimes this year to ten. In six of the cases, there were prior complaints. The most recent incident occurred in Sarriguren, where the police arrested a man accused of murdering his wife with a knife and injuring his mother. If confirmed as an example of gender violence, the total number of women killed by their partners or ex-partners since 2003 would rise to 1,353. Of the 48 victims of gender violence in 2025, Spain has experienced one of the worst starts to the year in 2026. In a month and a half, six children have lost their mothers in 2026 due to femicides, bringing the total to 510 since 2013. In addition to the nine femicides, two cases of vicarious crimes must be included this year: the murder of Noemí, María José’s daughter, and the case of a 10-year-old boy murdered in Arona by his father.
