Caracas.- This Monday, the Parliament of Venezuela announced that 2,021 individuals under precautionary measures and 177 inmates have received benefits thanks to the Amnesty Law, according to statements by Deputy Jorge Arreaza, who leads the commission responsible for ensuring compliance with this law. The deputy reported during a meeting at the Miraflores presidential palace with «victims of political violence» that, thanks to the law, 177 releases have taken place and 2,021 full freedoms have been granted to individuals who were under a reporting regime. He mentioned that the commission has received «over 3,000» requests and continues to receive new demands in «some» courts across the country. The NGO Foro Penal has confirmed 464 releases in the country between 8 January and 22 February; and at least 65 releases since the amnesty was approved last Thursday. The parliamentary commission led by Arreaza is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the law and examining other cases that are not included in the amnesty. The legislator emphasised that the objective of this law is to foster democratic coexistence and peace. He also recalled that since December, there have been more than 800 releases, a figure supported by the current government.
