Pope Leo XIV urges to ensure the sovereignty and well-being of Venezuela following the capture of Maduro.

This Sunday, Pope Leo XIV declared that «the well-being of the Venezuelan people must be the priority» in response to the detention of President Nicolás Maduro by the United States. He called for the safeguarding of sovereignty and the rule of law in the Caribbean nation. «I am closely following the evolution of the situation in Venezuela. The well-being of the Venezuelan people must be the priority and motivate us to leave behind violence in favour of justice and peace,» he affirmed from the window of the Apostolic Palace after the Angelus prayer. The Pope urged for «the assurance of the sovereignty of the country, the maintenance of the rule of law established in the Constitution, and the respect of the human and civil rights of each individual.» He also encouraged efforts «to create a future of cooperation, stability and harmony, paying attention to the most disadvantaged who are suffering due to the economic situation» of the South American nation.
