Rutte praises Spain for the increase in defence spending despite disagreements with NATO.

Brussels. This Thursday, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte highlighted Spain’s military spending, which has allocated 2% of its GDP to defence by 2025. He commented that «the future will tell» whether the country is right to consider that 2.1% is sufficient to meet its responsibilities towards the Alliance, or if greater investment is required. Rutte expressed his admiration for Spain, noting that at the beginning of last year, the country’s defence spending was around 1.3 or 1.4%. In April, he received a call from Pedro Sánchez, the Prime Minister, who told him: ‘We are going to reach 2%’ and indeed they did. This means that billions will be invested in defence for a more robust economy. He highlighted the countries that have reached 2%, mentioning Belgium and Canada, and then referred to Spain as one of the «key allies.»
