Sánchez launches a series of measures to demonstrate that the legislature has scope.

Madrid. In the first months of the year, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has announced or promoted several initiatives related to housing, the economy, the financing of autonomous communities, agriculture, and international politics, with the aim of demonstrating the work of the Government and suggesting that the legislature has a future. Following a challenging 2025 for the Government and the PSOE, marked by cases of sexual harassment and other corruption scandals involving the socialists, the opposition intensified its call for early general elections. However, in his evaluation of that year conducted in December, Sánchez dismissed that option and confirmed that the legislature would extend until 2027. «There is still much to be done,» he stated at that time, and urged his ministers to focus on implementing social measures that could be carried out, in certain cases without the need to go through Congress. It is not only about promoting social policies but also about making decisions in other sectors that demonstrate the Government «is active» and ready to address the debates and concerns that arise both nationally and internationally. After his first public event in 2026, where he participated on 6 January in a meeting in Paris with leaders of the Coalition of Volunteers for Ukraine, Sánchez communicated that he would conduct a series of meetings with representatives of the parties that have representation in Congress. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss the possible participation of Spanish troops in a peace mission in Ukraine.
