Copenhagen.- The Prime Minister of Denmark, Mette Frederiksen, stated that the pact regarding Greenland that the United States is negotiating with NATO does not question Denmark’s sovereignty over that autonomous region, according to NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. «NATO is aware of the position of the Kingdom of Denmark.» We can discuss political issues, such as security, investments, and the economy. However, we cannot put our sovereignty on the table. Only Denmark and Greenland have the authority to decide on matters that affect them, Frederiksen stated. She emphasised that the Danish Government has worked with that of Greenland throughout the process and has maintained a «dialogue» with NATO. Furthermore, she mentioned that she had conversations with Rutte «both before and after his meeting with President Donald Trump in Davos.» «Security in the Arctic is a concern that involves all of NATO.» It is fitting that discussions take place between the Secretary-General of the Alliance and the President of the United States. The statement notes that «the Kingdom of Denmark has been working to ensure that NATO intensifies its commitment in the Arctic.»
The agreement between the U.S. and NATO regarding Greenland does not challenge Danish sovereignty, according to Denmark.
