Havana (EFE).- On Friday, the Communist Party of Cuba reported that members of the island’s government have engaged in discussions with representatives of the United States government. The communiqué states that «under the leadership of Army General Raúl Castro Ruz and the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, Cuban officials have been in dialogue with representatives of the United States government.» In a recorded message, Díaz-Canel indicated that «Cuba has engaged in discussions with representatives of the United States government to find solutions to the discrepancies between both governments.» The president added that the aim was «to identify the issues that require attention and the possible solutions that can be considered,» clarifying that agreements are «far off.» The goal is «to establish the willingness of both parties to undertake actions that benefit the peoples of both countries» and «to recognise areas of collaboration to address threats and ensure the peace and security of both nations,» as well as «of the Latin American and Caribbean region.» Díaz-Canel mentioned that in these «exchanges,» the Cuban delegation has expressed «its desire» for them to be carried out «on equal terms and with respect for the political systems of both countries, as well as for the sovereignty and self-determination of our governments.»
