The DNI in digital format, which does not replace the paper version and can be stored on a mobile phone, will be accepted from 2nd April for identification before any entity. A year ago, the National Police launched MiDNI, the official application that facilitates the obtaining of the DNI in digital format. This document was regulated a year ago by a royal decree published in the Official State Gazette. People who have downloaded it will be able to use it as a form of identification, so the corresponding entity or administration must have the necessary resources to validate it. It is a project of the Ministry of the Interior carried out by the National Police in collaboration with the National Mint and Stamp Factory. The Police stated that it represented an improvement in documentation services for citizens and described the digital DNI as an advancement in the digital identity project, transforming a phone into a means of identification. It was emphasised that the DNI on the mobile phone is complementary to the physical document, which must be renewed once it expires and reported in the event of loss or theft.
