The draft amnesty in Venezuela proposes to annul the cases of political prisoners since 1999.

The proposed amnesty law in Venezuela suggests the annulment of cases of political prisoners since 1999, the year when chavismo assumed power in the country, according to the draft of the regulation published by the National Assembly. The Legislative power, under chavismo’s control, shared the draft law on its Telegram channel a day after having approved it in the first of the two scheduled discussions for the creation of regulations in the country. The draft of the Amnesties for Democratic Coexistence Law, presented by interim president Delcy Rodríguez, consists of 13 articles and aims to grant amnesty to all individuals who have been tried or convicted for political or related crimes, covering the period from 1 January 1999 to 30 January last. The draft highlights moments of crisis that have occurred in the last 27 years, with the most recent being that which originated after the presidential elections in July 2024, due to the re-election of Nicolás Maduro, which was declared by an electoral body under the control of officials close to chavismo.
