Brussels.- This Monday, the European Union approved legislative modifications that will enhance its asylum policy and simplify the return process for migrants who do not meet the criteria for receiving protection within the bloc. The regulations had already received the green light from the community institutions. The Council of the European Union has officially announced today the first list of countries of origin classified as «safe», which includes Morocco, Colombia and Egypt. The regulations defining a «safe third country» have been approved. The Council clarified that the list of EU safe countries of origin and the changes to the definition of safe third country will come into effect on 12 June 2026, alongside the rest of the Migration and Asylum Pact.
