The Government and the majority of political parties have condemned the Islamophobic and xenophobic chants heard during the friendly match between Spain and Egypt at the RCDE Stadium in Cornellà-El Prat. These incidents are being investigated by the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Executive has referred them to the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The Islamic community and the football sphere, including the player Lamine Yamal, have also expressed their condemnation. During the match, a section of the spectators chanted «Muslim, whoever doesn’t jump», after boos were heard during the Egyptian national anthem. During the half-time, a message was displayed on the stadium’s scoreboard reminding that the regulations to prevent violence in sport prohibit and penalise participation in violent, xenophobic, homophobic or racist acts. The Minister of Sports of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Berni Álvarez, expressed his outrage at these racist chants and voiced his dissatisfaction with the delay in implementing the protocols.
