Madrid, 5 January (EFE).- The Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, expressed his desire that the European Union would have responded to the United States’ attack on Venezuela and the detention of Nicolás Maduro. He called for a rearming of democratic principles in light of this precedent. In an interview with Ser, Albares stated that Spain is at the forefront in responding to the US operation. He referred to the statement signed by Spain, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Uruguay, as well as that of the European Union, highlighting that the first two paragraphs of the latter are clear regarding respect for international law. According to his statements, he has not had communication with the US Administration since the start of the US intervention. The action took the Government by surprise, although the minister mentioned that they had been observing a US military deployment in the area and that some type of operation could have been anticipated. Spain, along with several other countries in Europe and Latin America, is calling for a resolution of the conflicts and respect for international law. Any solution for Venezuela must arise through dialogue among Venezuelans in a democratic and peaceful manner.
The Government sees the EU’s response to the US attack as insufficient and calls for moral rearmament.
