The Pope warns that the principle prohibiting the use of force to violate borders has been broken.

Pope Leo XIV alerted the diplomatic corps at the Vatican about the breaking of the principle that prohibited nations from resorting to force to infringe upon the borders of other countries. He highlighted the fragility of multilateralism and warned of the resurgence of war as a means of resolving disputes. Leo XIV told the ambassadors that diplomacy that fosters conversation and seeks agreement among all parties is being replaced by diplomacy based on force. The pope expressed his sadness that peace is no longer pursued as a value, but rather through violence. The pontiff also pointed out that this endangers the rule of law. He emphasised that it was this stance that led humanity to the Second World War, from whose ruins the United Nations emerged. In this context, Leo XIV requested attention to international humanitarian law, asserting that it cannot be subject to circumstances or military and strategic interests. He underscored that the aim of multilateralism is to provide a space where people can gather and converse, and that to initiate that dialogue, it is essential to reach a consensus on the language and concepts used.
