Washington. This Wednesday, the Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, stated that Spain’s decision not to allow the use of its bases for the military operation against Iran is unacceptable and that this position endangers the lives of Americans. In an interview with CNBC, Bessent did not provide details on how the United States would implement the trade embargo proposed by President Donald Trump against Spain for its defence spending within NATO and its refusal to allow the use of the Rota and Morón bases for the operation. When asked whether the United States could impose a trade embargo on Spain, Bessent commented that it would be a joint effort, without offering further information on the legal framework the Government could use to implement a measure against an EU member state. Bessent stated that it is unacceptable for Spain not to cooperate regarding the bases and what could be done with the planes during the operation. Any delay in the ability to carry out this war puts American lives at risk.
