The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced that members of the opposing side died on Saturday during the operation to capture Nicolás Maduro, including Cubans who were guarding the detained leader, who faces charges of drug trafficking and corruption. Trump expressed his sorrow over the deaths and mentioned that the security forces responsible for protecting Maduro suffered losses during the Delta Force operation. «Many Cubans lost their lives yesterday defending Maduro,» the president stated. Maduro’s security included Cuban agents. According to Venezuelan sources, Venezuela reported 80 deaths during the operation, while Washington authorities stated that around six American soldiers were injured, although Trump did not verify these figures. Venezuelan authorities have not provided figures on the dead or wounded due to the bombings. However, Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López stated that part of Maduro’s security team was killed and that they were gathering information on the victims. Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Yván Gil, also informed CELAC about the deaths of civilians and military personnel. «International humanitarian law was violated by carrying out attacks that resulted in the deaths of individuals not involved in hostilities,» the foreign minister asserted.
