This Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte discussed security in the Arctic and its importance for the Alliance, in response to Washington’s remarks regarding the takeover of Greenland. During a telephone conversation, Rubio and Rutte talked about Arctic security for NATO members, as stated by Deputy Spokesperson of the State Department, Tommy Pigott. They also addressed U.S. initiatives to reach a resolution to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The dialogue between the U.S. Secretary of State and the leader of the transatlantic bloc takes place against a backdrop of global controversy due to President Donald Trump’s intention to acquire Greenland, considering the possibility of military intervention and the implications this could have for the future of the Alliance.
