Ignacio Garriga, the Secretary General of Vox, stated that they will support the legislative proposal from Junts to ban the burka, as long as it is identical to the one they have presented in the Congress of Deputies, which has been rejected by Junts. Following Junts’ announcement that they will not back Vox’s initiative in Congress to prohibit the burka and niqab in public places, Garriga indicated that they could support it. «If the proposal is identical to Vox’s, we will support it because our goal is to improve people’s lives.» «And if it only includes the niqab, we will make amendments to ensure that the burka is also included,» he declared in an interview with Catalunya Ràdio. Junts’ rejection will prevent Vox’s proposal from advancing, despite the PP expressing its support. According to Garriga, it is clear that Junts is unwilling to back a Vox proposal because they consider them «fascists and homophobes.» In the bill presented by Junts, there will be a request for the transfer of state competencies related to security and identification of individuals to Catalonia, as indicated in their statement, although Garriga has not commented on this matter.
